Sure, it's naive to think that sports should always be a bastion of pure competition, untainted by greed, but when someone just rubs the corporatism in your face, it's always going to go down badly. MisCommunicator of the Week Award goes to FIFA President (at least for now), Gianni Infantino, for his ridiculous proposal to sell a stake in the World Cup to private investors. Let's be honest. Corruption has always been a feature of world sport. But usually it is kept below the surface, so that most people just wouldn't notice it. We first saw it surface at the World Cup when Infantino cancelled the red card for an American player at the behest of Donald Trump. Had the US gone on to win their next game, the outrage would have been louder. But they didn't. Thankfully, Infantino's 'suggestion' to sell a minority stake in the World Cup has been soundly rejected by everyone, including other footballing bodies. Infantino has abandoned his plans but the damage to his standing will continue. There will be times when you have to propose something new or even radical. How you communicate that idea can have an outsized impact on the reception it receives. I always advise clients to float their ideas in the corridors. That means you run your idea by key stakeholders outside the boardroom before the meeting and before it is formally announced. This gives you the opportunity to gauge the response, factor in any relevant feedback, or even pull the proposal instead of pitching it.T his means you will know how your proposal is likely to be received, which will then inform the way you finally present it.
