Feel the Burn!

Communicator of the Week Award goes to UK Prime Minister, Andy Burnham for his Labour Party conference speech this week,

There was no doubting the impressiveness of Burnham’s speech.

He shared some big ballsy proposals:

National care service. Reversing Brexit. Nationalising utility companies. Removing the triple lock on pensions. Electoral reform. Leasehold reform. Reindustrialising the country.

And he spoke with emotion. At times tearfully - with no notes and without a lectern.

This was about as different from Keir Starmer as it was possible to be.

People often worry about making big moves. They worry about the backlash. They worry that people will disagree, maybe even dislike them because of it.

So they keep it small and play it safe.

That’s a mistake.

Big ideas don’t have to be perfect. In fact, the bigger they are, the more resistant they are to petty critiques.

Even when people disagree with you, they are forced to respect and reckon with you because big ideas change the narrative and reframe perspectives.

If you have bold proposals, don’t hide them.

Work through them to make sure they are coherent, then share them boldly and with passion.

Be bold! Communicator of the Week Award goes to the ‘Lady in Blue’ art piece by Tschabalala Self, which is the latest sculpture to sit on the fifth plinth of Trafalgar Square. In the modern era of relentless scrutiny where cynicism, criticism, and outright hostility are the inevitable response to anyone who dares to communicate anything outside the norm, it would be easy and forgivable for an artist to choose to play it safe. It is inspiring to see that Tschabalala Self chose to do the...

In this volatile and fractious world, community matters more than ever. Communicator of the Week Award goes the Notting Hill Carnival, which turned 60 this year. For all the scaremongering about carnival that a hostile press has pushed as a narrative over the years, it remains the largest community event in Europe and second largest in the world (after Rio's). Men, women, children, families meet, sing, dance, eat and laugh together in a celebration of culture and community. The most important...
