Dad: ‘What’s the one rule when things go wrong?’ Kids: ‘Dont panic!’ Dad: ‘Why?’ Kids: ‘Because you can’t make sound decisions when you make them in a panic’ I have this discussion every once in a while with my kids to drum into them the importance of getting hold of themselves in an emergency so they can use good judgment in those critical moments. So Mis-Communicator of the Week goes to viral kiss cam couple (or are they?) Andy Byron and Kristin Cabot, who forgot the ‘Don’t panic’ rule of dealing with a shock situation. You’ve seen the video by now I’m sure. Tech CEO, Byron, and his Chief People Officer, Cabot, cuddling at a Coldplay concert when their image was suddenly projected onto the large kisscam screen. Chances are if they had just kept calm and carried on or even had a little kiss, no one would have noticed or paid attention or even known they were there. But of course, they didn’t. Instead they frantically ducked and tried to dodged the moment, which of course just made everyone pay even more attention. And of course the 3 second clip has now gone mega viral. Byron has resigned. Cabot’s future with the company hangs by a thread. You will inevitably find yourself in moments of acute stress, emergency or disaster. How you conduct yourself and communicate in those immediate critical moments can determine the entire course of how that disaster will go for you. Internally, you will feel the rush of blood because you are human. The question is what happens next. Either you get hold of your panic or it gets hold of you. You can use whatever technique works for you: controlled breathing; repeating mantras; counting backwards from 10 etc. And once you get over that initial freak out and manage to ‘keep your head when all around you are losing theirs’, you will project an air of calmness and control, which will enhance your authority with all those around you. (Although it’s probably a better idea not to conduct yourself affair in the middle of a 66,000 people concertl) Kolarele p.s. book in for a chat once you’re ready to start working on your comms skills |
Good at what you do, but struggling with your communication skills? Igotchu! 😎
When your leadership and example matters, your mistakes can have greater consequences. Mis-Communicator of the Week Award goes to Reform UK (Kent County Council) for the debacle of their zoom council meeting, which was leaked to the papers this week. Reform have a credibility challenge. People are angry with the status quo and Reform have very effectively stepped into that gap with a message that panders to fears and promises change. But now they are in government in Kent County Council, they...
In his seminal work on the art of rhetoric, Aristotle identified that there were 3 cornerstones of persuasion: Logos (the use of logic), Pathos (the appeal to emotion), and Ethos (the credibility and character of the speaker). Communicator of the Week Award goes to US President Donald Trump for the considerable part he played to secure the tentative Gaza peace deal. You may (as many do) consider Donald Trump to be an unpredictable, unprincipled, uncouth autocrat, but where all the parties on...
Golf is hard at the best of times! But when you're playing in the biggest tournament in the world, against the best players in the world, with the pride of your country or continent on the line, golf requires Herculean levels of effort, focus and concentration. The job of fans is to support their own team and to give some stick to the opposition. But as with all communication, you have to match your tone to the moment. 'Go in the hole!' when one of your players has just hit - fine ✅ Shouting...
